Cargo plane 'hits bus' in Ghana airport crash

Ten people have been confirmed dead in the cargo plane at the Hajj Village near the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, according to the National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation Mr Kofi Portuphy.

The cargo plane which landed at the Kotoka International Airport Saturday evening lost control and crashed into a number of vehicles at the Hajj Village near the El-Wak Stadium in Accra.

Ten of the passengers aboard a 207 benz bus, one of the vehicles into which the plane crashed lost their lives. Many others sustained varying degrees of injury.

The dead and the injured have been conveyed to the 37 Military Hospital.

Joy News reporters who were at the scene say the plane landed with such impact that the pilot apparently lost control resulting in the crash.

Police, military and fire service personnel were at the scene to redirect traffic with mounting fears that the plane may explode and cause extensive damage to life and property.

Vice-President John Dramani Mahama led the pack of government officials to the accident scene.

He assured the international community that the airport was operating as normal.

According to him, the accident would not affect business at all.

Deputy Transport Minister Dzifa Ativor said investigations will be launched immediately into the accident.

Amongst the government officials at the scene were Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Henry Smith, and Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Alfred Vanderpuije.
